3.4. The Neuter Article
As an option, Neolatin has the neuter article. This article appears masculine, but is of neutral gender. Use the neuter article to make an abstract adjective or an adverb a noun. A helpful piece of advice is to think of "lo" with an adjective as meaning "thing"/"part" or "that which is".
Lo bòno / La bòna causa | The good thing |
Lo mellîore / La mellîore causa | The best thing |
Lo naturale / Lo que èst naturale / Cuello que èst naturale | The natural / That which is natural |
Lo bòno èst que haveva una paraplobbia. | The good thing is that I had an umbrella. |
Lo mellîore que pòtes fàcere èst non vívere en lo passato. | The best thing you can do is to not live in the past. |
warning
Do not use the neuter article to make an adjective an adverb. This is a particularity of Spanish that is not seen in most other Romance languages.
For example, in Spanish there are three ways to translate the sentence "It surprises me how fast he runs".
- Me sorprende lo rápido que corre.
- Me sorprende cuán rápido corre.
- Me sorprende qué tan rápido corre.
To use an adjective with an adverb with a sense of degree in Neolatin, use the adverb of quantity "quanto".
Example: Me sorprènde quanto ràpido corre.
